In Ireland there are grants of up to €2,100 for solar panels. The Solar Module Grant is used to finance the purchase and installation of photovoltaic (PV) and battery storage systems.
Important: Solar financing was discontinued on January 1, 2024; the maximum grant has been increased from €2,400 to €2,100.
A photovoltaic system consists of solar panels installed on the roof of your home that produce electricity. You can also use a battery storage system to store the extra energy generated and use it when the sun isn’t shining.
For a 1 kWp photovoltaic installation, 3 or 4 solar modules are necessary on the roof. The electricity produced powers all the electrical consumers in your home and the excess can be stored in batteries. You can also divert excess electricity to a hot water bath. It can also be injected into the electricity network from home.
A typical solar panel has a power of 350 watts, showing its performance. A panel of this kind produces an average of 265 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year. Some solar panels can generate up to 575 watts of power.
